Conservation work in Walberton
Is
mostly carried out by the Walberton Action Group. Besides the normal
work maintaining footpaths and ponds WAG has recently expanded its
conservation activities by adding three ambitious new projects to its
current sand pit project:-
-
Landscape improvement . . . . . WAG obtained a grant to improve the landscape in various parts
of Walberton by clearing a pond and planting hedges and trees. The
project took 3 years to complete starting 2003. Walks were arranged
recently so that those interested could appreciate the scope of the
improvements. Report

Walberton Churchyard Heritage Project . . . . . This project was supported by the
Local Heritage Initiative group in the Countryside Agency to improve
and learn more about the churchyard in ways that involve a number of
groups and the school. Walberton Media made a video of the project
entitled "Hidden Gems" which is available in VHS form. The Countryside Agency have given us a grant to cover the
costs. Report 1

-
Walberon Parish Hedgerow Survey . . . . . Walberton have agreed to support the Sussex hedgerow Survey
which is being co-ordinated by the Biodiversity Partnership. Mr Peter
Challis explained the "how" and "why" at a WAG meeting on March 11th. He
confirmed that WAG's Phase 1 Habitat Survey of the parish, completed
during 1995 has now been digitised and forms a useful basis for the new
survey. More?

The
Sandpit Conservation Project . . . . . The disused gravel pit north of the A27 has, unfortunately,
now become a 4_wheel drive training centre. so its conservation has had
to be put on a back burner. However WAG are watching the situation with
aim of reversing this state of affairs if the opportunity arises.

Rights of Way Improvement Plan . . . . A
report on the condition of all the
public footpaths and bridleways has been made. Once the Parish
Questionnaire has been analysed, we hope to put together a report to
the Parish Council suggesting necessary improvements and where new
paths are needed.
-
Flint
Wall Survey 2008
. . . . . .Recording all flint walls in
the parish visible from the public highway, together with a
description of their condition. We hope it will be an aid to
accessing funding to restore those walls most at risk. It is also a
valuable addition to the village archive and will be the focus of a
joint meeting are to hold with Walberton History Group on 22nd
April 2009.
- Wild Bird Survey 2008
. . . . .
Bird Survey of the parish – a great success with the co-operation of
some 20 landowners and an amazing 40 volunteers doing the survey.
Our friend David Hart, local RSPB chairman, has kindly analysed the
results and produced a report
