The Adventure Spreads to Walberton
Young People and adults rejoiced as the adventure of Scouting started at Walberton this week (13th October). The new Beaver Scout Colony is the first satellite section of 1st Barnham Scout Group, where the demand for Scouting is so high the only option was to open this new section to ensurethese young people got the chance to join in the adventure.
The boys and girls, aged between 6 and 8 years, who will be invested as Beaver Scouts later this term enjoyed a packed evening of games and getting-to-know-each-other activities. The section has an action packed few months planned including an African Drumming evening, a Scottish themed night and the Christmas Party.
Mike Wakeling, from West Sussex Scouts County Team, attended the launch evening. Mike said “Scouting offers young people and adults the opportunity to take part in a fun and exciting programme of challenges and adventures. And we’re so pleased to now be able to offer this to more young people in Walberton and the neighbouring community.”
Martin Roberts, part of the new leadership team at Walberton, said: “I’m new to Scouting, and the welcome I’ve received has been amazing. Our first meeting has been a great success. There’s a real buzz for Scouting and I’m so pleased to be part of it. Many people think volunteering is hard work but from what I’ve experienced so far it’s great fun!”
Luke, a new Beaver Scout, said: “I’m so excited about all of the adventures I am going to have, and I can’t wait for the African Drumming evening. And when I’m a Cub I’ll get to go camping.”
Scouting is growing in West Sussex, with more people enjoying the fun, challenge and adventure than ever before. You could be part of it too. About Scouting
· Adventure is at the core of Scouting, and the Association passionately believes in helping their members fulfil their full physical, intellectual
social and spiritual potentials by working in teams; learning by doing and thinking for themselves.
· In January 2008, The Scout Association introduced 40 new badges, including Snow Sports and Health and Fitness badges, bringing the total number of badges available to over 200. No other youth organisation offers such a range of challenging or exciting activities, available in a safe, supervised environment.
· Over 200 activities are offered by Scouting around the UK, made possible by the efforts of 100,000 voluntary adult leaders. This has helped make Scouting the largest co-educational youth movement in the country.
· There are over 10,000 Scouts in West Sussex, with 1,800 adult volunteers providing Scouting’s everyday adventure for more than 8,000 boys and girls aged 6 to 25.
· Scouting is a charity and is run by volunteers.
