Presented at the AGM on 16th November in the Village Hall Last year’s AGM was very helpful to your committee in setting our agenda for the year and much of our energy (hopefully renewable!) has been our preparations for the very ambitious Walberton Green Day on 23rd October – an event yet to take place when this report is being written. As is usual, WAG has been consulted on a range of issues and the following is a brief summary of matters that have concerned the committee over the year: Ø The South Downs National Park is now a reality, which covers much of Binsted. However, maintenance of footpaths will continue to be carried out by WSCC and planning applications will normally be handled by ADC. Ø John Heathcote organised several successful working parties to clear the ditches along Scotland Lane. Ø John Bushrod continues the development of our website: www.walbertonag org.uk Ø We are hoping to have installed two barn owl boxes this year Ø Self Unlimited have consulted us as to how they can relate more closely to this community Ø WAG has bid for Black Poplar cuttings – a species once close to extinction Ø There was an enjoyable guided walk around the parish on a sunny 18th March Ø WAG hopes to make progress on an access plan for the parish
The Committee spent a lot of time studying the Greening Campaign – an approach used by a number of communities to encourage residents and businesses to adopt the green agenda. It has been very successful and is a structured way of getting people to make real commitments to sustainable living. In the end we decided it was not suitable for Walberton, although we enthusiastically supported the thrust. Our preferred approach was the Green Day which took place just under a month ago. At the AGM we will be able to discuss how successful it was; suffice it to say here that we were delighted how many exhibitors were keen to attend. Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the committee who have served this last year: Wendy Coen (secretary), Geoff Alder (Treasurer), John Heathcote, Newton Coen, John Bushrod, Emma Tristram, Mike Tristram, Christine Llewellyn, Stephen Sibbald, Vince Cooper (our link with the History Group) and Sue Sregeant (our link with the Parish Council). During the year, Peter Hatley retired from the committee and we co-opted Robin Ellison and Tony Douglas.
