Six Walks About Walberton

Walk No 4

This walk is approximately 5 1/2 miles (9 Kilometres). The route covers gently rolling country. Some parts can get muddy after prolonged wet weather

Map for walk 4.

. . . .Take the path that runs away from The Street immediately to the east of the car park entrance and continue straight on up Avisford Park Road to Yapton Lane. Turn left. Take the first turning on the right, Hedger's Hill, and go down it past Beam Ends tea room to the right bend at the bottom. Just past the bridge over Binsted Rife a path leads off to the left over a 2 plank bridge across a ditch. Go up this alongside a wire garden fence to Binsted Lane. Turn left.

. . . .After about about 100 yards a bridleway leads off Binsted Lane to the left across a field (1). Take it. It leads into and through Barns Copse to a five barred gate where the path turns sharp left into Hundred House Copse. Follow it downhill and through a wooden gate to the right to get to the side of the A27.

. . . .Taking due care cross the A27 to the "Bridleway" sign opposite and zig-zag left then right through the crash barrier chicane. Follow the path uphill along the route of the old A27 for about 80 yards across a motor cycle barrier to where a path doubles back to the left. Go down this path and turn right along the edge of an old gravel pit which has recently been replanted with trees. At the end of the gravel pit pass between a Corsican pine plantation to the right and a sweet chestnut coppice to the left. After about 2/3 mile, just past several fine beech trees, it comes to the "Clapham Junction" of Rewell Woods where a number of tracks meet (2). Turn left down a logging track.

. . . .The track goes downhill past a scout camp on the right. Continue to the A29 ignoring the path going uphill to the left. Turn left along the A29 until the start of the dual carriageway (3). The Spur Inn lies a few yards straight on. Cross the A29 and up the wooden steps opposite and alongside fields. Stop to admire the view of the coastal plain on the left. Then pass through a childrens' playground into Slindon past the Newburgh Arms.

. . . .To see the best of Slindon, large areas of which are owned by the National Trust, continue straight on along Top Road and turn down the second on the left, Church Hill (4). Go down past a number of attractive cottages/houses, a thatched railway carriage (see right), the church, which contains an unusual wooden effigy, and the pond to a T junction with School Hill. Turn right to the next junction, Park Lane (5). At this junction the path to take starts down a hedge lined lane between the two roads. This path leads to the A29. Go straight across into the scrub then turn right and almost immediately bear left along a farm track. Where the track divides take the half left fork which goes between fields to the A27. Taking due care cross the A27 and walk down Copse Lane to West Walberton Lane. Turn left here to The Green and continue eastwards past the Holly Tree public house to the Village Hall car park.
